Overview

Live Like a Local in the Heart of Fiji’s Highlands

While many travelers visit Fiji for luxury resorts, beaches, and relaxation, there is a more meaningful way to experience the islands—by living with the locals. The Highland Village Homestay offers a unique opportunity to step beyond the usual tourist path and truly connect with Fijian culture, traditions, and daily life.

This immersive experience takes you to Saliadrau Village, where you will stay with a welcoming local family in a peaceful highland setting. Here, you won’t just observe village life—you will become part of it. From sharing meals to participating in daily routines, every moment brings you closer to understanding the authentic Fijian lifestyle.

Your journey begins upon arrival at Nadi International Airport, where a professional guide will greet you and assist with your transfer. The scenic drive to the highlands takes approximately four hours, with short stops along the way to relax and enjoy the views. Upon reaching Navua Town, often referred to as the gateway to the highlands, the journey continues in an off-road vehicle for about an hour, taking you deeper into the untouched beauty of Fiji.

As you arrive at the village, you will receive a warm traditional welcome with garlands and songs performed by the local community. You will then take part in a traditional Kava ceremony (sevusevu), a symbolic gesture of respect and acceptance into the village. This marks the beginning of your cultural journey.

During your stay, your guide will introduce you to village customs, traditions, and important cultural etiquette. You’ll also meet your host family, who will provide accommodation and make you feel at home throughout your stay. A guided village tour will help you familiarize yourself with the surroundings and community members.

Each day of your homestay is filled with meaningful and engaging activities. You can enjoy light trekking through lush rainforests, take in scenic mountain views on a horse riding experience, and explore native plants used in traditional herbal medicine. Cool off with a swim in a natural river pool or enjoy fun activities like river tubing and bamboo rafting.

The experience also includes hands-on cultural activities such as traditional farming practices, including kava and taro planting, as well as fishing methods used by locals. You’ll have the chance to visit the village school, interact with children, and participate in games and activities designed for families.

Evenings are equally special, with cultural nights featuring traditional “meke” dance performances, music, and storytelling by village elders. These moments provide deep insight into Fiji’s rich history, beliefs, and way of life. You can also learn traditional mat weaving and handicraft-making skills from local women.

Staying for multiple days enhances the experience, allowing you to fully disconnect from the busy world and reconnect with nature and community. Surrounded by serene landscapes and genuine hospitality, this homestay creates lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for Fijian culture.
